Rev. Michael Mitchell

Rev. Michael Mitchell is an ordained Assembly of God minister. He holds a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at DTS. He is writing his dissertation on the intersection of systematic theology and aesthetics, and currently teaches in the Bible and Theology Department at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

In the last 25 years, he has been a professional musician, free-lance fiction writer, journalist, satirist, carpenter, contractor, literature teacher, and rhetoric instructor—before he finally gave in and accepted God’s call on his life as a minister of the gospel. He pastored First Assembly of God in Stockdale, Texas, for two years before moving to the metroplex to attend seminary. He served as Associate Pastor at Church On The Hill for 4 ½ years under Jerry Weiss before Pastor Weiss’ retirement. His wife Carrath is a senior English teacher at Red Oak High School, and they have three boys: Elijah Coltrane (18), Isaiah Ellington (17), and Zechariah Armstrong (11).

In November of 2005, Mike was battling for his life against a Stage IV cancer. He was hospitalized, dying, and lapsing in and out of consciousness when his wife was told that he probably wouldn't live two more weeks. That weekend, his tumor markers turned around and went down slightly--for no particular reason. Buoyed by this miracle, his doctor began the radical treatment that he was originally going to forego. By Thanksgiving, Mike had been sent home cancer-free. This is a picture of him eating his first meal in months--Thanksgiving dinner. His wife carries this picture in her purse to remind her of the power of Almighty God.

His hobbies include hunting, fishing, gardening and smoking a fine brisket to perfection. He and his two older sons formed The Subliminal Gypsy Band, and recorded their first concept album in March of 2014. It is a blues-rock-gospel band that is represented by Calloway Management and Productions.

Mike combines an energy, sense of humor, and common touch to a life of devoted study of the Scriptures in order to be the best possible shepherd and friend he can be. He believes there is no spiritual growth without discipleship, and there is no discipleship without friendship. He is accessible and willing to work with anyone who considers himself a fellow-laborer in the gospel. Email him at This email address is being protected from spambots.
