What We Believe

Understand where we stand

Senior Pastor: Michael Mitchell

Rev. Michael Mitchell is an ordained Assembly of God minister. He holds a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, and is about to defend his dissertation for a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at DTS. He is writing his dissertation on the intersection of systematic theology and aesthetics, and currently teaches in the Bible and Theology Department at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

In the last 25 years, he has been a professional musician, free-lance fiction writer, journalist, satirist, carpenter, contractor, literature teacher, and rhetoric instructor—before he finally gave in and accepted God’s call on his life as a minister of the gospel. He pastored First Assembly of God in Stockdale, Texas, for two years before moving to the metroplex to attend seminary. He served as Associate Pastor at Church On The Hill for 4 ½ years under Jerry Weiss before Pastor Weiss’ retirement. His wife Carrath is a senior English teacher, and they have three boys: Elijah Coltrane is 21 and a senior at Texas A&M University, Isaiah Ellington is 20 and a junior at Trinity University, and Zechariah Armstrong is 13 and an 8th grader.

His hobbies include hunting, fishing, gardening and smoking a fine brisket to perfection. He and his two older sons formed The Subliminal Gypsy Band, and recorded their first concept album in March of 2014. They are currently writing and composing another one

Mike combines an energy, sense of humor, and common touch to a life of devoted study of the Scriptures in order to be the best possible shepherd and friend he can be. He believes there is no spiritual growth without discipleship, and there is no discipleship without friendship. He is accessible and willing to work with anyone who considers himself a fellow-laborer in the gospel. Email him at michael@churchonthehillag.org.

Favorite movie: The Blues Brothers and Life Is Beautiful

Favorite music: blues and jazz

Favorite band: Pink Floyd

Favorite novel: A Clockwork Orange (Anthony Burgess) and The Sound and The Fury (Faulkner)

Off-The-Wall Fact: only pastor’s office you’ll ever see with pictures of Charlie Parker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, and Alex from Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange all on the same walls.

Deacon Ministry: Matthew Anderson

Matthew Anderson grew up in the DFW metroplex, the son of ministers. As a child, his sweet spirit and earnest devotion to good led many to believe that he had been set apart by God for ministry. He played the drums and had a great love for music, so it’s not surprising that he ended up gravitating toward music ministry at Church On The Hill. He was saved at the age of 10 and preached in his father’s church at 15. A man of unimpeachable moral integrity and character, Matthew is one of the most dependable human beings to ever serve in ministry. To spend 10 minutes with him is to understand the gracious love of Jesus Christ. Email him at matt@churchonthehillag.org.

Favorite movie: The Avengers (this preference is not, apparently, shared by Shaun!)

Favorite novel: Lord of the Flies

Favorite Band: The Subliminal Gypsy Band (they played at his wedding!)

Hobbies: drawing, watching movies with his wife.

Off-The-Wall Fact: When the pastor sent him to the grocery store to buy hot sauce for the men’s breakfast once, he came back with some strange Tobasco-based concoction instead of salsa, like a true Texan would have known. This earned him the nickname “Hot Sauce,” and a lifetime banishment from all kitchen-related activities.

Children's and Youth Ministry

Elijah Mitchell is a lifelong musician who is also an accomplished scholar. He was a champion debater and public speaker in high school, and is a summa cum laude graduate of Texas A&M University. He teaches high school English and literature, and has a special gift for teaching young people.

Molly Mitchell, a talented vocalist, is also a top graduate of Texas A&M University and the daughter of a great pastor’s family in the Carrollton area. She teaches high school English and literature in Red Oak, and loves the care and teaching of children. There is no one on the planet who can defeat her in a Bible drill.

Elijah enjoys the discipline of musicianship and the creativity involved in drums and guitar. Molly enjoys watching The Office reruns and lights up a room with her laughter whenever she enters, and can find any harmony regardless of the melody involved. Both of them keep fairly busy with their daughter, Esther Mahalia, born in April of 2020. They currently lead the musical portion of worship at COTH, as well.

Favorite movie: Clueless (Molly) and O Brother Where Art Thou? (Elijah)

Favorite music: blues, rock, gospel

Favorite band: The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band

Favorite novel: All the Pretty Horses (Cormac McCarthy) and Paradise Lost (Milton)

Off-The-Wall Fact:

(Elijah) As a child, Elijah once set off the alarm at the emergency door of McDonald’s, and is to this day quite nervous around emergency doors.

(Molly) has been known to dabble in plans for world domination with her father-in-law, but her real gift is making weird faces. Come to church and find out for yourself.
